WINDOWS 3.X TIPS
First-Have at least 8MB of RAM installed!
Second-See my DOS Memory Page to tweak up your startup files for maximum free memory!
Third-Don't use disk compression software-huge hard drives are cheap!
Fourth-Consider buying "Hurricane" from Helix Software to improve Win3.x/WFWG performance.
Fifth-get a copy of "Windows 3.1 Secrets" by Brian Livingston.
Windows 3.1:
- Create and use at least a 5-10MB "Permanent Swap File." SCANDISK or CHKDSK/F then DEFRAG your hard drive first or if you change it's size! Some applications may demand an even larger one. (Go to the "386 Enhanced" icon in Control Panel
-
Try to turn on and use "32 bit Disk Access" (Again at the "386 Enhanced" icon)
-
Upgrade to Windows for Workgroups (WFWG) -it's file system is much faster!
Windows for Work Groups (WFWG) 3.11:
- Use a "Permanent Swap File" as above.
-
Try or turn on both "32 bit Disk Access" AND "32 bit File Access."
Note1: "Windows 3.11" (Not WFWG) was a minor, free update of a few EXE files for Win3.1.
